September 2013

Thursday 26th September saw St. John's transformed into a sea of colour, culture and languages from Europe and beyond. 'The European Day Of Languages' is always a big event in the MFL calendar, this year proved to be the biggest and best to date. 110 students descended on the school from twelve Catholic Partnership schools across the region.

On Wednesday 25th September St John's held its Sports Awards Evening. During the first half of the evening students are awarded either their half or full colours for showing commitment, dedication and high performance levels in their sporting activities. This year St John's had one of its most successful years collecting 43 trophies over the course of the academic year so averaging more than one per week. The roll of honour saw these collected and presented together.

We are keen to hear your views and value feedback so would be very grateful if you could complete the form using the link below:

We hope you will respond to our questionnaire and we look forward to receiving your feedback so that we may continue to work in partnership for the benefit of all students at St John's.

This year the Catholic Partnership hosted the first ever Bellboating competition. 7 year 8 students (Tomasina Appleton, Megan Batty, Bernire Whitworth, Chloe Woodfine, Jake Morris, Peter Danks and Jack Maddison) competed for St Johns (with a little help from Miss Somers). With stacked hands and some detailed coaching we first competed and lost against St Aidan's school. In the second race with unbelievable communication and Coordination we beat St Bede's.

The cycling club took it's first outside ride with a tour around the pavements, tracks and roads of Bishop Auckland. Kitted out with fluorescent high Vis jackets and bands we were nearly as retro as the Sixth Form football team! It's still not too late to join the club. For information see Miss Somers

Our Local Heroes Project was inspired by a memorial to ordinary people who have committed acts of extraordinary bravery, often sacrificing their own lives in order to save the lives of others, in Postman’s Park in London. A group of Year 7 students (as they were then!) as well as pupils from St Charles’ Tudhoe, St Cuthbert’s Crook and Our Lady and St Thomas Willington visited Durham County Record Office to conduct research and identify their own local heroes.

Prospective students and their families are warmly invited to our Open Evening for Year 6, on Thursday, September 19th from 6pm.

Thursday 12th September was St John's first ever Watt Bikes cycling competition. A Watt bike is an exercise bike that tracks speed and distance. Students and teachers had to cycle 1000m as fast as possible. Well done to all involved especially Mr Kipling who won the staff race (in his trousers and shirt) and Noah Ellis who won the year 7 boy's race. Winners received a cycle helmet! The School will now represent the area in a competition against Darlington Schools in the new year.
