This year the Catholic Partnership hosted the first ever Bellboating competition. 7 year 8 students (Tomasina Appleton, Megan Batty, Bernire Whitworth, Chloe Woodfine, Jake Morris, Peter Danks and Jack Maddison) competed for St Johns (with a little help from Miss Somers). With stacked hands and some detailed coaching we first competed and lost against St Aidan's school. In the second race with unbelievable communication and Coordination we beat St Bede's.

Thursday 12th September was St John's first ever Watt Bikes cycling competition. A Watt bike is an exercise bike that tracks speed and distance. Students and teachers had to cycle 1000m as fast as possible. Well done to all involved especially Mr Kipling who won the staff race (in his trousers and shirt) and Noah Ellis who won the year 7 boy's race. Winners received a cycle helmet! The School will now represent the area in a competition against Darlington Schools in the new year.

I am also delighted to announce an exciting new club that will be starting in September. The St John’s cycling club will start on a Thursday 3-4pm. Initially for the first half-term we will open it up for Year 7’s to Year 9’s. Students will need to bring their own bikes to school. During the 6 week block the students will also learn about bike maintenance and safety on the roads. The numbers are restricted to 20. Letters and information are available from Miss Somers.

Four teams from St John’s competed in the first round of the English Schools’ Track and Field Cup at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow. A total of 56 students, ranging from years 7 to 10 competed. The Junior Boys’ squad qualified for the next round of the competition, finishing runners up in the ‘B’ final at Clairville, Middlesbrough. This means that the boys finished in the top 10 of all schools from the North East, Humberside and North Yorkshire. Congratulations to all!
