Dr Mark Truran, a Senior Lecturer from Teesside University, came to talk to Year 12 ICT students about how Google (and other search engines) work as part of their coursework.  Students were introduced to the basic concepts of search engine creation during the interactive talk.

The St John's 'Music Night' event is a showcase of the many talented musicians from across the school.  The evening gives host to a variety of ensembles and soloists, catering for a wide range of musical styles and tastes!

From classic rock songs to original compositions, there is something for everyone!

Acts include Forte!, Blown Away, We Killed the Bass Player, The Brothers in Pinstripes and many more.....

 

“Strictly St John’s” is an event which started in 2011 to raise money for Project Peru. In our version of ‘Strictly’ staff and Sixth Form students take to the dance floor to compete against each other in order to win the ‘Strictly’ glitter ball. The dances range from the Cha Cha Cha to the Waltz and the Quick Step.

Eight lucky students from St John's travelled to Westminster Abbey on 12 March to attend Commonwealth Observance Day in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Having won the coveted tickets following their contributions to the Jubilee Time Capsule, the students were permitted entry to the ceremony which celebrated culture and friendship.

The BTEC Art and Design group have been commissioned to decorate the wall outside of Art2. Students decided on a jungle scene inspired by the work of the renowned artist Henri Rousseau and a contemporary Japanese artist Kasama Yoyoi. They have been working on this commission since January combining aspects of both the artist’s work to design mythical creatures of their own and a full jungle scene for the 'crazy creatures' to live amongst.

Year 9 students were recently involved in an e-safety presentation from Mr Simon Finch, Northern Grid for Learning. This presentaion was focused on raising the profile of e-safety and measures that students can take to make themselves more protected online.

St John's Year 8 girls were 2nd at the Regional Sportshall Final held at the  Louisa Centre Stanley.  St John's finished runners up in the County Finals, some of the outstanding performances and achievements are:Alice Parsons: 1st 2 Lap Race, 2nd Speed Bounce 1st 8 Lap Parlauf with Ashlyn Bland.

The recently installed stained glass at Main Reception is just one of the artworks produced during the Aycliffe Angels Project in late 2009.  This was to celebrate the brave and selfless women who worked in the munitions factory in Newton Aycliffe during the Second World War.  Year 7 students at St John’s as well as Year 6 students at St Joseph’s and St Mary’s, Newton Aycliffe took part in the project which was made possible by The Forge and supported by Arts Council England and Durham Count

Today, Friday 24th February, we had two representatives in from Laing O'Rourke construction company to work with a Year 7 technology classes. Laing O'Rourke have already been in to talk to some other Year 7s about what type of jobs are involved in the construction industry. They are visiting again to continue working with some other Technology classes about Sustainability in Construction. Today's task was to work in teams to build the tallest and most value for money tower.
