This week has seen some amazing activities taking place at St John's involving Year 5 students from local primary schools. Year 5 students were given a taste of life at St John's and experienced lessons from across the curriculum. The students carried out experiments, made key rings, worked with digital graphics and much more. They commented on the experiences on our transition blog: http://stjohnstransition.wordpress.com/.

Nicky Cresser, a Maths teacher at St John’s School and Sixth Form College in Bishop Auckland, has been selected to race the World Cup Series as part of the Great British Wild Water Racing Team, in the individual men's kayak (K1M)

At the rigorous selection weekend in Wales back in April, Nicky dominated the Classic event, winning by over 10 seconds, and finishing in 3rd in the Sprint event, behind Olympic bronze medalist Jonnie Schofield and the very experienced Jamie Christie.

Four teams from St John’s competed in the first round of the English Schools’ Track and Field Cup at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow. A total of 56 students, ranging from years 7 to 10 competed. The Junior Boys’ squad qualified for the next round of the competition, finishing runners up in the ‘B’ final at Clairville, Middlesbrough. This means that the boys finished in the top 10 of all schools from the North East, Humberside and North Yorkshire. Congratulations to all!

On the 25th May over forty students and staff travelled to the Etihad Stadium in Manchester to watch the first day’s fixtures of Rugby League’s Magic weekend. The students had a fantastic day, watching four matches in glorious sunshine. The four matches included the Catalan Dragons against London Broncos; Castleford Tigers versus Wakefield Wildcats; a heated Hull derby between Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers and finally St Helens versus Warrington Wolves.

Before half term the Year 8s travelled to Parkside on a very wet and windy Friday night to play the League Cup Final against the host side. Despite the difficult conditions, St John’s started well and some excellent link up play created several early chances. St John’s scored the opening goal, with some strong running from Adam Dobson on the right, exchanging passes with James Hardy and leaving a simple tap in at the back post for Aidan Crooks.

On Wednesday St John’s School and Sixth Form College held a unique celebration evening. In addition to the annual sports awards evening, the school wanted to recognise the outstanding achievements in football this year. Dick Malone, formerly of Sunderland FC was the guest of the evening bringing with him the FA Cup! He spoke warmly of the ‘support and team ethic that made the schools’ teams so successful this season’.  His attendance alone made it a great experience for any Mackem parents.

The Sports Leaders group have been part of the Sky Sports Living scheme and subsequently get visits from two athletes. The first visit was from Steve Frew a commonwealth Gymnast who won Gold in Manchester on the rings. During the day Steve did a classroom based session with the group followed by some team building activities. He was also kind enough to stay back and work with the gymnastics group, he first demonstrated his skills before coaching them and watching some of their performances.

On Sunday 9th June Miss Somers, Mr Rhodes and Mr D Smith took the Year 7 boys to the International Futsal at Northumbria University. After becoming Northern Champions the boys year 7 Futsal team were selected to be the mascots. The boys accompanied the players onto the pitch at the start of the matches for the National Anthems and then watched the games. The first game was a close encounter between Poland and the USA which the USA won.

The boys had a fantastic Futsal campaign this year, winning the district competition without losing a game. This victory enabled them to qualify for the regional finals held in Leeds at the International Futsal venue. They competed exceptionally well in this competition competing against a number of Futsal clubs. After 3 victories, 1 draw and 1 defeat, they narrowly missed out on qualification for the national finals.
