St John’s awarded the Silver Kitemark

The Sainsbury's School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and a national finals event.

St John’s runs a wide range of activities and opportunities that allow students the opportunity to take part in intra-school competitions. Through the old pastoral competitions and the new house tournaments students will have the opportunity to represent their house and compete against others to win points. Last year the PE Department introduced this to include Olympic events such as handball and rush hockey to motivate students.

The next big events will be the house cross-country competitions and Miss Smith’s Trampolining Competition. Beyond these intra school competitions St John’s students represent the school in a wide range of events including badminton, table-tennis, football, rugby, cross-country, swimming, kayaking, golf, waterpolo, basketball, netball, gymnastics, tumbling, trampolining, dance, athletics, tennis, cricket and many more. It was outstanding to see the range of activities students also play at County level. 39 students last year represented the County in one or more sports. In addition, last year six St John’s students were part of the winning team in the Durham Youth Games. Amy Brown, who is now in Year 13, also won National Representative Awards for swimming in the International Sports Federation for Catholic Schools games.

Students’ drive and passion to play sport, get involved in competition and enjoy physical activity are outstanding. As a result staff available to run many different clubs and competitions ranging from students at a beginners level who just want to try a new activity or play sport to the students who are competing at County and National levels who are involved in school practices and matches/ competition on a weekly basis.

To find out more about activities and clubs please see the notice board in the Sports Hall and watch out for updates on the VLE.
