Katie says: "Although I'm ecstatic to be starting university, I'll miss sixth form; without the help and support I received throughout my time here, I may not be where I am now! The highlight has to be the two weeks I spent doing humanitarian work in Peru in 2010.
As there were many more applicants than places on the trip, I was ecstatic when I was told I was going, although slightly apprehensive about raising the £1500 which would cover the costs of the project. St John's was fantastic in ensuring all twenty five students were able to raise the money, not only providing great ideas but organising fundraisers, such as the 'Strictly Come Dancing' event, the coast to coast bike ride and bag packing in supermarkets.
The actual trip has had a major impact on my life; more than I could ever convey in several sentences. Although it was incredible, it was also an emotional rollercoaster, and for this reason the group really bonded. Peru made me want to do more work of a similar nature, so I arranged to spend this last summer teaching HIV/AIDS awareness in Malawi, Africa; another fantastic experience.
I now hope to continue doing voluntary work alongside my education, an idea I may not have considered if St John's had not provided me with this amazing opportunity.
