In a new category which recognises advanced vocational exams, state schools including Archbishop Holgate’s School, in York, St John’s School and Sixth Form College in Bishop Auckland, Carmel College in Darlington and St Bede’s Catholic Comprehensive School in Peterlee were among schools featured in the top 100.
Matt Dunn, director of sixth form at St John’s, described his school’s position as 17th in the country for advanced vocational exams as “outstanding".

St John's students have been making great progress with revision using SAM Learning. There are currently 671 active users in Year 7-11. The avergae user spends 3 hours on revision and learning activities. 

The total number of task hours is at 2030 and 87% of task hours are completed outside of school time. Science, Maths and English are leading in the subject revision race. 

The Under 15 girls have reached the quarter final stages of the English Schools National Cup after a 7-1 victory over Kepier School. This is only the second time in history a St John's team has got this far and the first time for a girls team.  Having travelled to Wakefield and Huddersfield the girls finally played a home fixture.

The opportunity has arisen for the Physical Education Department to take 15 students to the Manchester United v Sunderland Carling Cup Semi- Final Second Leg, on Wednesday 22 January, 2014 at Old Trafford football ground, Manchester
