July 2013

12 year 10 students visited Archers Ice Cream Parlour near Heighington to observe first-hand how ice-cream is manufactured. The students had a great morning, visiting the farm where the owner, Sue Arcger explained the problems faced by British agriculture over the last 15 years and the ever pressing need for diversification.

Our Sports Leaders group have taken part in the ‘Sky Sports Living’ scheme this year, and as a result they have had the opportunity to meet two top class athletes in school. Our first visitor was Steve Frew, a Commonwealth Gymnast who won Gold in Manchester on the rings. During the day Steve led a classroom based session with the group, followed by some team building activities. He was also kind enough to stay after the session to work with our gymnasts!

St John's has announced the opening of a Rugby Academy which will launch in September 2013. This exciting new venture will enable talented athletes to combine elite rugby performance with academic study.

On Friday 5th July over 250 students from St John’s School and Sixth Form College celebrated their successes throughout the year with a Summer Spectacular. Students all enjoyed the opportunity to: jostle on the giant Jungle Run obstacle course; rumble on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Joust; go crackers on the Crazy Golf; consume colourful clouds of candy floss and experience the extra-terrestrial 40ft Alien Laser Quest- it was out of this world!

On Friday 5th July Miss Somers, Mr D Smith and Mrs Oulton took 14 students to Wimbledon to watch the tennis. Despite a 4am departure the group were in good spirits on arrival at the All England Tennis Club. The students were able to see Novak Djokovic warming up for his game against Del Potro before taking their seats on Court 1 for the women’s and mixed doubles semi-finals. Most students then opted for sitting on Henman Hill or Court 2 to watch the men’s semi-finals on the big screen.
